Journaling leaves:

  1. Look closely at a leaf: notice lines, edges, colors and textures. Make note of your observations.

  2. Does the leaf smell?

  3. Draw the mid-vein from the base of the stem to the tip of the leaf

  4. Draw the edges of the leaf

  5. Add in the veins that go from the mid-vein to the edges (notice whether they emanate exactly across from one another or not)

  6. Add color noting places that are lighter or darker in color

  7. Write down measurements, unusual features, species name (if you know it), questions you have about it

  8. Describe its habitat, location, nearby plants, any animals around, things you hear
