Journaling feathers:

  1. Draw the rachis (midrib) from the bottom (calamus) to the tip of the feather

  2. Add in the downy fluff at the lower end of the rachis

  3. Notice the direction of the vanes and how wide the feather is; lightly sketch an outline of the vanes

  4. Draw in the lines of the vanes adding appropriate colors and markings

  5. Add your notes: whose feather is it? what part of the bird is it from?

  6. Where did you find the feather? How did the feather get there?

  7. Note: It is not legal to possess bird feathers, so please return the feather to where you found it
